CONTROVERSIAL and DAMAGING         CHINESE DRYWALL Concerning NAPLES - FT MYERS and
        all of SW FLORIDA Residents

What is Chinese Drywall?

Drywall is a dried layer of gypsum plaster pressed between thick layers of paper. It is a common building material that has come under intense scrutiny after posing hazardous effects to human health and the environment, particulary by the type brought into the United States from China. Subsequently, Chinese Drywall has become a "hot topic" with the media. After discovery of gas emmissions that may irritate the respiratory system and skin, causing sinus problems and nose bleeds, this controversial material has triggered serious concerns in many American neighborhoods. Laboratory tests of the material sow alarming levels of sulfurous gas emissions including carbon disulfide, carbonyl sulfide, and hydrogen sulfide. These gasses produce a foul odor of "rotten eggs" that becomes worse at warmer temperatures and high humidity, a weather condition naturally common in Florida. Chinese Drywall reacts chemically with metals such as Copper, resulting in corrosion to electrical wiring, air conditioning coils, pipes, plumbing materials and other home equipment. Chinese Drywall, also known as contaminated drywall/tainted drywall, is made from mined gypsum, which speculatively contains bacteria that breaks down iron and sulfur compounds resulting in sulfurous gas compounds.

Health Hazards

Due to its toxic content, the controversey surrounding this subject is growing at an alarming rate. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has received a great number of complaints from households throughout the U.S. As a result of the climate, the Florida Department of Health has been inundated with questions regarding the use of Chinese Drywall. Most of these are health-related issues, citing symptoms such as recurring headaches, irritated and itchy eyes, dizziness, sore throat, breathing difficulties, dry cough, runny nose, nosebleeds, and sinusitis, aamong others. One hazardous compound tought to be found in Chinese Drywall is strontium sulfide. Strontium sulfide is a substance that may adversely affect bone growth, visual and sensory perceptions and could pose serious problems to the cardiovascular system, eyes, kidneys, liver and skin.

Hiring a Professional Inspection Service

eyezon Home Inspectors will look for signs of possible Chinese Drywall usage in the home. These signs include a sulfer (rotten egg) odor, markings on drywall visible in the attic, discoloration of the electical wiring, inspection of A/C system and plumbing. A sample from one sheet of drywall , sent to a lab to be analyzed could be very costly. That sample would only be of one sheet of drywall out of hundreds used in the home, not very effective. We recommend this option ONLY if we find evidence from the visual inspection or smeel strong odors of sulfur.

If you live in Collier County or Lee County and have any concerns, call     eyezon and schedule a Chinese Drywall Inspection today.
